LEE ON THE SOLENT

Our remit for this project was to remove the existing reproduction concrete (imitation) setts and replace with authentic reclaimed granite setts.

The existing paving had only been down for 10 years.  While it may have served its purpose, it wasn't wearing to well.  The paving was losing its colour, breaking up and its surface was showing signs of  wear due to constant traffic.
Authentic granite setts combined with our method of laying have been proven suitable for over 30 ton and already have over 100 years of wear under their belt with many, many more years to come.  They are not only far more durable and aesthetically pleasing to the eye, they are considered by many to be an investment.  The old adage is true, you get what you pay for.

These photographs illustrate some of the common problems associated with concrete paving.  The first photograph is actually of the paving under cover, you can see the stark difference in colour.

Now the fun begins, breaking up with the Pecker.

Time for the baby breaker to have a go, don't want to be damaging any walls now.

Due diligence required, plastic covers to protect tarmac, don't want to make any more mess than is absolutely necessary.

Setts have arrived, out with the old and in with the new.  Can something that is over 100 years old be considered new??

Despite being over 100 years old, these reclaimed setts are very clean and look as good as new.   Some things just get better with age (unlike Cookie.)

Area has been cleared, now time to set out the falls.  Reducing waste by re-using the sub base.

Bringing in the setts.

Toys away, now the hard work starts.  Bands going down first.

Setts are set in rows ready for laying.  These are laid on 4/1 sharp sand cement on a 150mm sub base

We lay the setts on a semi dry mix then water applied later.

Welcome to our newest team member "Belle", isn't she a beauty :-)

Ready for straight through, all lining up.

Top of step level across 15 metres

The setts are wet regularly, just like the Cookie Crew, they can never have too much to drink.

Boards are placed on top of Setts to create a temporary walkway.

Really starting to take shape now.

Close up of the 4/1 sharp sand bedding

Mustn't neglect the drainage, ACO drain with cast iron grating.

Cutting in down and ramp to bike store.

Replacing under the entrance you saw in the first photograph.

End of courtyard.

Topping up with 3/1 slurry mix before resin.

Remember the steps from the earlier sett laying photographs?  Now it is their turn for a makeover.  Concrete slabs removed to make way for reclaimed stone.

Steps are infilled with cut down setts.

Setts are cleaned ready for pointing.

Tubs of Romex 2 part resin ground black basalt

 Resin going in.

After a hard days graft.

Setts to entrance.

Big boy granite kerbs, start of extra work.

Temporary drain gulley while road waiting to be resurfaced.

Side gate done and bands down driveway, poor Belle not looking her best.
